We are excited to reveal that we’ve won the Best Sustainable school Award!
The Eco/Gardening club entered the Journal and Gazette newspaper School awards July 2014 and were shortlisted into the top 3 Best Sustainable school Award.
Miss Halliday took Poppy Smith, Shane Spoors, Tyrese Giblin and Lauren Green pupils from Year 4 and Eco/Gardening club members to the award ceremony at Ramside Hall. The children took part in golfing activities and had a mini-beast experience before the award ceremony.
As part of our Sustainable school entry we made a book all about RAPS Sustainability projects both new and ongoing within our school. We also made a ‘News report’ video showcasing our fantastic provision for an Eco friendly learning environment.
As a school we have ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ at the heart of our philosophy for moving forward. We have embedded the sustainable curriculum into our lessons and over time have developed fantastic provision for children to develop their knowledge of maintaining and developing a sustainable school.
Our Friendship garden includes developing a bee environment by planting lavender to encourage bees to use the school grounds to collect pollen. Our wildlife garden continues to grow with the building of a second bug hotel and planting of more wild plants. We have developed a new allotment plot over the last two years and are very successfully growing a variety of fruit and vegetables.

Year Six celebrate winning a trip to the cinema.
All the students of year six have won a private screening of How to Train Your Dragon 2, thanks to their attendance record.
The children of 6W had the overall best attendance in the school, but because 6G give them a run for their money and also to treat them as part of their leavers celebration we have decided to reward them all.
Tomorrow they will be visiting a local cinema for a private screening of the film.

To launch the 2014 RHS Britain in Bloom campaign and to celebrate Bloom’s golden anniversary, the school has entered this years Britain in Bloom and Sunderland in Bloom competitions.
We have a long history of horticultural awards having achieved a fantastic outcome in the 2013 awards grading us the highest ‘gold’ standard within the Northumbria area to the point where the school was included in the Sunderland City in Bloom local area judging route.

We haven’t rested on our laurels however and with summer slowly approaching we’ve been out re-potting and planting and watching the mature plants come into bloom bringing with them the colour of spring and summer to our already beautiful gardens.

Eco and Gardening club along with the help of Mrs Todd, Mrs Atkinson and Miss Halliday assessed whole school grounds with the aim to continue to keep our school at a high standard of cleanliness and well designed garden areas. The children from the whole school then carried out the required tasks.

They designed flower beds around school to incorporate current themes at the time, this included pirate and butterfly flowerbeds near nursery and a lilac and lavender theme for our Friendship garden.
