Activity Week 2023 | July 16, 2023

Everyone has had a fantastic week full of physical activities. Football, Total Wipeout, Climbing Wall and Boxercise were just a few of the amazing experiences for the children.

The weather has been perfect and it has been heartwarming to see all of the children wearing the biggest smiles and to also hear their laughter. Thank you to Keep Active, football coach – Mohamed Hmida (Score Mo), Sunderland Climbing Wall, Michael Heatley (Hit the ground dance) and Premier Bouncy Castles for providing us with their equipment, skills, talent and enthusiasm through-out the week.

A HUGE thank you our wonderful Mr Spoors for organising a phenomenal week of sporting activities for our children to enjoy. The atmosphere in school has been super-charged with excitement, and for all ages.

Lots of Sporting Updates | June 26, 2023

Cricket

Richard Avenue have enthusiastically embraced the beginning of cricket season by taking part in a number of cricket activities. Miss McKinney has also been regularly updating us on her ventures to various cricket games, including a very wet day in Birmingham for the Ashes.

Chance to Shine Cricket day

Children from Years 2 – 6 participated in cricket activities with James, a cricket coach from Chance to Shine. The children practiced their batting skills and their catching skills in the sunshine.

“It was a very fun day and nice weather for cricket. I hit the ball well and got 4 runs.”

Masud from Y3

Boys’ Cricket

Two teams from Yrs 5&6 attended the boys Sunderland cricket finals at Hetton Lyons Cricket Club. The boys played some brilliant cricket led by Yahya (Y5), our talented cricketer who plays outside of school. Both the teams showed determination to score lots of runs before showcasing their great bowling and catching skills. Team 1 finished third in their group and team 4 finished fourth – well done everyone!

Girls’ Cricket

Our Y5&6 girls’ cricket team entered the Sunderland Girls cricket finals at Washington Cricket Club. All of the girls had a great day, developing their skills and showing fantastic teamwork. Mehreen (Y6) even had one of her shots go out of the playing field. Well Done girls!

Tennis

After receiving tennis coaching in school, four boys and four girls were selected for the Year 3 tennis team. They all played individual matches against children from other schools and also team races. Overall, the children made over 100 points. A fantastic effort by everyone.

“I played and won lots of matches. I got so much better with my serve.”

Aiyaz from y3

Basketball

The year 6 basketball team entered the Sunderland basketball finals at Vertu Motors Arena. They played 5 games in their group, winning 4 games and losing one by a very close margin. Alec (Y6) used his excellent basketball skills (he plays basketball at under 12 level outside of school), to captain and motivate the team to show passion and determination in each game. Some great long shots by Arafaat and fantastic pressure by Mehreen was crucial to the team’s success. Although a scoring error meant the team did not get their chance to participate in the quarter finals as they should have, Mr Spoors made sure the team left the competition feeling proud of their performance.

As the last of the sporting competitions have been wrapped up for the school year, Mr Spoors and the staff team would like to say thank you to everyone who has represented the school with pride and passion this year. A special thank you to the Y6 pupils who have represented the school in many competitions throughout their time at Richard Avenue, we hope you continue to develop and shine in the next steps of your sporting journey. A final note from Miss McKinney and a huge thank you to Mr Spoors for all he has done and continues to do to encourage, support, organise and lead our sporting teams with so much commitment and ambition

Thank you Mr Spoors!
