Over the last few weeks we have been a hive of activity preparing the school for Christmas. This includes the amazing decorations the staff put up around school and all the hard work that has gone into the Christmas productions and performances.
The first performance was by Key Stage 1 who performed ‘The Little Fir Tree’, for teachers, children, parents and carers.

Later in the week we were treated to EYFS performing their production, ‘Christmas Counts’ during which we heard both amazing singing and the children pulling off some extraordinary dance moves and solos.

The final production of the week was KS2 performing their Carol Service. A time to bring everyone together we watched some beautiful singing of many Christmas staples.

Its really been a wonderful and festive last few weeks and we wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Enjoy your holidays everyone.
On Monday Year 2 participated in a Great Fire of London drama workshop to introduce their new topic.
They firstly looked at the houses in 1666 and why the design of the houses contributed towards the fire. They worked in groups to make houses using their bodies. They then learnt about the ways people fought the fire and came up with actions to match. Finally they looked at who helped and hindered during the Great Fire of London and worked in groups to make still ‘photographs’ of this.
A great day enjoyed by all that will definitely inspire their new history topic.
We recently held a Recycling Week here at school. Our aim was to ensure that the children know:
What is pollution and what link does it have to recycling?
What is recycling and why is it important?
What impact can you have to help our environment?
We did this by carrying out a number of discussions and activities with all the year groups.
Key Stage 1 did such things as looking at the story of the Messy Magpie and how collecting litter ruined her habitat. From this the children had a discussion about the impact of pollution and wrote a poem about 5 ways we can help the Earth. This culminated in an activity to sort through rubbish left in different terrains to see what needed to be recycled and what thrown into the rubbish.

Key Stage 2 watched the BBC documentary The Blue Planet, and followed it with a discussion about how waste, including plastic waste is having an extreme negative effect on our planets oceans. They made a poster showing 5 ways to help the Earth and carried out an Environmental Review where they answered check boxes and left comments about how our school meets up to the expectations of the Eco Schools Ten Sustainable Topics.

We started the week with a whole school assembly about Fairtrade and then each year group carried out research into why Fairtrade is important and why we should be supporting it. The children then made posters to encourage people to buy Fairtrade products. Year 2 wrote letters from the point of view of Fairtrade farmers, telling people why Fairtrade helps them and their families. Year 5 and 6 held a discussion on whether we should buy Fairtrade chocolate and the arguments both for and against.
All this work culminated with a display board we have put up in school that displays all aspects of the work we have done throughout the week.
Year 2 had a very messy visitor last night! A T-Rex came into our school and wrecked Year 2’s classrooms, leaving dirty footprints and poo behind!! We are really enjoying learning about Dinosaurs and today enjoyed a day full of roarsome dinosaur activities! We excavated fossils, made lots of dino crafts and had lots of fun!

Also, due to fire regulations you are now discouraged from bringing a child’s buggy to such events. If you need to bring a buggy these will now be required be left outside on the pavement (just outside Mrs Todd’s Office).
Year 2 have been learning about London and The Great Fire of London. Today the children took part in a drama workshop around The Great Fire of London. Children re-enacted the different methods used to try and put the fire out, such as using water squirts and leather buckets. They made still photographs in groups to show how people help or hindered London during and after the fire. Children also worked in teams using their bodies to create the shape of houses in 1666.
Today the school held their annual Safer Internet Day for 2018. Throughout the day the children learned how to respectfully use the internet and to think of others while doing so. The topic this year was ‘create, connect and share respect: a better internet starts with you’, and our topics were centered around that.
One of the interactive topics included the children making a connective jigsaw. They were asked to consider how as a person they could make the internet a more positive place. We received answers such as “don’t be disrespectful and say hurtful things if you cant say anything kind”. The children when then made to understand that if their own positivity was added to that of others then the internet will become a more positive place as a whole. The way a jigsaw comes together.

In other parts of the school the children watched a video where children in the video would send a text message and then our children were asked how they would respond to such a comment. We asked them to be honest and a lot of the children gave both positive responses and some gave negative ones. We then quizzed the children on why they had made the comments and to think how they might escalate or diffuse a situation with positivity.
The children also made posters about things they liked about school. The posters were then given to other children who would write comments about the poster on the back. They then went through the comments with their teacher to teach them how both positive and negative comments would make that person feel and how they could be more positive and constructive when commenting.

All in all a great day of learning and understanding that hopefully the children and the teachers can take forward in their online life.
